If your author truly believes in open and honest dialogue about race, he needs to understand that and recognize the validity behind the “mob’s” outrage. -
Can we plaster this on the side of a blimp and tout it in every city and every state in this country? We could also give free blimp rides to those who make a commitment to be anti-racist!

Thank you saying that. For those who say "I'm not racist," well... that's not good enough. Learn how to be anti-racist, there are classes for that.

Re: Paid vacation doesn’t count as an act of service

Here you go.

Re: Paid vacation doesn’t count as an act of service

I wonder if "guest" would be willing to show these facebook posts. Kind in mind, this has never been about apologizing...this has been about facts. Mr. Hamilton's original post was fulls of hot air (not backed up by proof) and so far...you've only offered hear say and facebook messages as proof. If you are going to get all huffed-up about this and claimed that this trip wasted student funds, then the burden is on you to prove it. If student funds wer cleared for travel for example and that money wasted used for travel...then you would have a case. But eh...I feel like I am wasting my time arguing with somebody who wont even reveal part of their name (so people can check the accuracy of their claims).

And by the way, if you want to ask the actual attendees about these concerns...they are having a public event on 04/24/2012 at 1:30pm in SU room 211 discussing their experience(s) on the trip.

But the housing is just awful and there are more boarded up buildings than bustling bars, galleries, markets, restaurants etc. there isn't even a movie theater within walking distance of campus. Midtown UNLV is the only solution and that's gone nowhere in years.

Re: Paid vacation doesn’t count as an act of service

As other commenters have rightly pointed out, drugs and alcohol are forbidden on these trips. One of the main tenets of the Alternative Spring Break program is that they are providing an alternative to the drugs and alcohol-laden partying that spring break is usually known for. Now, as any critically thinking adult would note, it is not likely to give a 100% ensurance that such substances will be used but it's highly unlikely given the caliber of students selected.

Re: Paid vacation doesn’t count as an act of service

Would this commenter like to provide evidence of what areas of San Francisco these students went to?
Though Mr. Hamilton has been forced to eat his words in the
past, due to his penchant for baseless claims, here he is once again speaking
before knowing the facts. Let us address his points one by one:

1)
It is no surprise to any of the attendees to ASB
that there exists a local HIV/AIDS support community. And while these organizations
do deserve all the help they can receive, trips like these are meant to hopefully
allow students to network and develop ideas to implement in their local
communities. In fact, several of the attendees have already been involved in
local organization, such as the Sin City Sister, which Mr. Hamilton cited. In
fact, students at UNLV held an event/auction aimed at raising money for the
Sisters but as usual, Mr. Hamilton probably didn’t research this before claiming
UNLV students attending ASB ignore our local HIV/AIDS community.

And a quick note: Mr. Hamilton called the
office that supported this year’s ASB a,”…miserable, anti-intellectual,
anti-academic pit...” Funny, I wonder if Mr. Hamilton feels that way about the
UNLV student, and former CSUN senator, who attended ASB in 2006 and helped
rebuild homes affected by Hurricane Katrina?

2)
Yes, one of the common critiques of such a
program is: Why should students have to go elsewhere to confront issues we have
at home? Well 1) This takes students out of their element and immerses them
within the work they are trying to undertake during the trip 2) Often times,
the cities chosen tend to be representative of the issue(s) that the group is
trying to address each year and 3) As mentioned above, such an activity allows
for networking and idea-sharing that is often crucial for local progress. Either
way, this very issue is discussed by the attendees themselves.

3)
Mr. Hamilton attempted to point out that San
Francisco was hardly the sacrifice as it’s promoted, being that many people
might consider San Francisco a desirable vacation destination. This point makes
no sense. So by Mr. Hamilton’s line of thinking, putting in some serious work
cannot exist in a community that’s viewed as a desired vacation spot. That
being said, if we were to take Mr. Hamilton’s OWN suggestion and instead devote
that same time with local groups such as the Sin City Sister or I’m Positive,
we could not consider such work “giving up ones’ Spring Break” for service
either because a lot of people would also consider Las Vegas a desirable
destination. Come on Ryan, you have to have a better one than that.

4)
As with other points, Mr. Hamilton’s 4th
attempt to dispute ASB is baseless. So let’s get this straight, if a trip meant
for service puts students within even the general vicinity of something “fun”,
it can no longer be considered a service trip? So I suppose Mr. Hamilton would refuse
to call helping out needy folks on the Strip a “service” since it’s happening
on the Strip?

Then again, Mr. Hamilton’s own statement says
it all: “…I cannot be certain of the details of the itinerary.” Service does
require sacrifice as Mr. Hamilton rightly asserts but god forbid somebody tries
to bring some levity to an emotionally-charged trip.

Does Mr. Hamilton have any proof of what amount of student
funds went to pay for this trip? And if any student funds were used…what was
paid for with this money? And finally, if items were paid for with student
money…I challenge Mr. Hamilton to prove that the purpose of the trip violates
the mission statement(s) or goals that outline for what purpose(s) student
money is meant.

If Mr. Hamilton does not have facts to back up these
assertions he is spewing…he should not only cease and desist this ridiculous rant
but perhaps reconsider majors as well.

Re: Vegetarianism an unnecessary extreme

"Animal cruelty does need to stop, but my hunger for meat isn’t going to."

NO ONE wants to live near UNLV. The area around it is a very dangerous zip code. What can you possibly learn about fighting homelessness from camping out on a lawn? The answer, in any society that values truth and sacrifice, is you can't. You can learn something by going to the many flophouses around Las Vegas and the many that are just across the street from UNLV. You can meet the people who live life for-keeps, not half-glazed and star-struck like the kids on this vacation. There is no glamour in that reality, which is why nobody bothers to help them.

Re: Elections carry controversy

I just went to Angie Sullivan's FB page and found more than a hundred searchable photos, including photos of herself.

Re: Rebels United sweeps
CSUN Executive Board elections

I wonder if The Rebel Yell giving Ciavola free advertising for his campaign helped edge him over his competition. They have no proof that she was connected to it but
they would like readers to believe that she is regardless of the fact
that there is no proof.
The
UNLV paper goes on to state, "Rebels United supporter Ken Minster
identified Sullivan from photos on her Facebook page, and the party
believes she may be among those behind the effort."
Again,
there is no proof that she was on campus for malicious reasons. These
statements by the UNLV paper do bring up some very important questions
though. Why did Ken Minster blame Angie Sullivan for something he had no
proof of? An even better question also comes to mind. Why was Ken
Minster, a UNLV student, able to identify Angie Sullivan, an elementary
school teacher, from her Facebook account? An account which has no
personal photo on the main wall and very few searchable photos.
The
UNLV paper wants readers to suspend disbelief, ignore the complete
absence of facts, ignore the creepy stalker behavior of Ken Minster, and
just follow along with their poorly cobbled together narrative about
"the Democratic Party" being out to get Mark Ciavola.
To
fully understand the real facts behind the article you have to dig
deeper than the highly partisan UNLV paper bothered to do. A very quick
search on Ken Minster shows that he has listed himself as "Campus
Outreach Director for the UNLV College Republicans" on his twitter
account. The two political parties don't usually employ college students
to do opposition research on activists for opposing parties but it
seems that in Ken Minster's case they have made an exception. There
really is no other plausible reason that he could or would recognize
Angie Sullivan, a relatively unknown K-12 education activist, on seeing
her unless of course he really is stalking her. Let's hope he's a paid
operative for the Republican Party and not stalking an overweight
elementary school teacher.
The
one thing the UNLV paper is very careful to steer clear of is Mark
Ciavola's documented history of being paid by the Joe Heck (R)
Congressional campaign for harassing his political opponent, ex-UNLV
professor, Congressional Representative Dina Titus. I doubt anyone would
blame the democratic party if they decided to give Mark Ciavola a taste
of his own screeching hissing venom but if they were out to get him
wouldn't they have done a better and more organized job of it? The UNLV
paper also avoids mentioning Mark Ciavola's continued use of the UNLV
College Republican's resources to campaign for office and to recruit
Republican volunteers for his presidential bid.
The
UNLV paper decides to double down with their unaccredited statement
that, "Two Facebook accounts associated with ABC were shut down due to
alleged harassment." Anyone bothering to contact Facebook to inquire
about these "ABC" accounts being shut down for "harassment" won't be
surprised to learn that Facebook has no record of shutting down any such
accounts.
All
of this leads to the UNLV paper's continued cobbling together of rumors
that some mysterious student was overheard speaking out against The
Rebel Yell's endorsed candidate Mark Ciavola. The sum total of all the
provided evidence leaves any intelligent reader wondering why the UNLV
paper is publishing a conspiracy theory dreamt up by Mark Ciavola and
Ken Minster in a dark smokey room inside the Republican Party offices.

Re: Vegetarianism an unnecessary extreme

Was happy reading up to the point where lack of protein and "other nutrients" were mentioned.
